Bible Speller — Data Usage Information

The App: Bible Speller - Beta App

Learn the books of the Bible by learning how to spell them. When given the books before and after, you will try to spell the missing book between them.

Get it on Google Play

Update: Notice

As of around mid 2021, this app has no longer been sending any answer data (or any data from the app) back to a server. The following only relates to data collected before that time.

Data Logging

This app keeps a log of incorrect answers provided by users. Answers such as when a correctly spelled book title is given but is not the expected answer for the book in question, the answer is spelled correctly after having used the backspace to correct a mistake or a misspelled answer is provided.

While a database is built containing answers provided from all users of the app, it does not attach any specific user identifiable information to the data that is accepted into the database. At this time the only information stored is a time and date stamp along with the answer provided and the correct answer the app was looking for.

Data Usage

At this time the data is not being used by anyone. It is only occasionally monitored for development purposes.

The purpose of the app, however, is to build a useful set of data over time. In this way, one day the data may be freely given to third-parties (such as Bible apps, Bible websites and others providing Bible content to the public) for usage in their projects. Those projects may generate profit but this app's data should not be bought or sold itself.

The data won't be sold. The intent is to provide the data freely to the public. It won't contain any user information other than the aggregate accepted answers from all users.

More Information and Data Usage Requests

If you have further questions about how and what information is stored please contact the developer directly using the email provided on the Google Play Store listing of the Bible Speller app.

If you represent an organization that may have a use for this data please contact the developer in the same way to get that process started.

Possible Use Cases for Data Collected

There are many ways this data could be used by developers who already provide Bible content to their users.

For example, imagine a Bible app that allows users to jump to a book of the Bible by typing the book name. If a user types "Marj" their app may have to provide an empty set of results because that is not a book in the Bible.

Now if that same app was able to apply the data generated from this Bible Spelling game, they would know that "Marj" is a common misspelling for the book "Mark". This is due to the "j" key being physically adjacent to the "k" key. When in a hurry, people often hit "j" by mistake.

As you can see, with lots of data from lots of users, the data may be modeled in such a way that it provides an auto-complete or "did you mean" feature for third-parties that want to apply the data to their project.

Intent of this document

This document is only meant to inform users or potential users of the Bible Speller app of how data is planned to be used and is not meant to be a legally binding contract. This page may be updated over time and if you have any questions or concerns please don't use the app and/or contact the developer directly.
